Fall for the Discovery Trail

Fall for the Discovery Trail “Some fine Fall day with the air just cool enough to put a colour in your cheeks, and the wood ripe with decay, you’ll think nothing could ever be wrong, or that there’s no storm that we can’t weather.” (from The Trinity Pageant)

Nature and heritage jostle for attention in this beautiful region, and now you can enjoy it in the picturesque autumn as well. So bring a sweater and enjoy unique historic sites, theatre, and scenic trails to explore. All while breathing the fresh, crisp ocean air.

Just Before Dinner at Fisher’s Loft Inn

Just Before Dinner at Fisher’s Loft InnThe elegant Fishers’ Loft Inn presents “Just Before Dinner”, a reading series presented in partnership with the Writers’ Alliance of Newfoundland. Some of the province’s best writers will read from their work while you sip a preprandial libation and gaze at the magnificent views from the Inn’s windows. Is it any wonder we have so many award-winning writers when the juxtaposition of land, sea and sky provides constant inspiration?

Cupids – The Oldest English Settlement in Canada

Cupids – The Oldest English Settlement in CanadaCupids is one of our most significant historic sites, since it is the oldest official English speaking community in Canada and the second oldest of its kind in North America. When John Guy entered this tiny harbour in 1610 he brought settlers on his vessel with the intention of founding a permanent colony. In 1613, the arrival of a child to the Guie family was the first recorded birth of an English child in Canada. Today, Cupids is a beautiful and peaceful outport less than an hour’s drive from St. John’s, with a charming museum and a fascinating archeological dig.

Lighthouse Picnics

Lighthouse PicnicsA one-hour drive from St. John’s will bring you to the historic community of Ferryland and the joys of Lighthouse Picnics. As one of the oldest communities in North America, Ferryland is rich in history and culture. As you cross the Downs to the lighthouse, you’re retracing the steps people have walked for hundreds of years, scanning the sea for warships and privateers. When you arrive at the lighthouse a gourmet repast awaits, complete with picnic basket and blanket. Chef Sonia was trained at the prestigious Ballymaloe Cookery School in Ireland, with Chef Darina Allen, and she makes everything from scratch, using fresh local ingredients and organic produce. This is one experience you’ll never forget.

Relax – You’re on Newfoundland Time

Relax – You’re on Newfoundland TimesThe Island of Newfoundland lies squarely in the eastern half of its time zone, exactly three and a half hours from Greenwich and thus is a half hour ahead of the rest of Atlantic Canada. Cape Spear, just outside the capital city of St. John’s, is the most easterly place in North America. Here you can be the first on the continent to greet the new day or the New Year.

Life on the Eastern Edge

Life on the Eastern EdgeBecome a scientist for a day and travel with Captain Jan Negrijn aboard the “Coastal Explorer” to gather data on the teeming sea life of Bonavista Bay. Collect samples of plankton and other sea life, learn how to use an echosounder, and examine various species using a field microscope, while seabirds and Eagles soar overhead.

The East Coast Trail

The East Coast TrailThis is a remarkable trail along the east coast of the Avalon Peninsula. Trek for an hour or for a multi-day experience that will leave you in awe of our beautiful land. See whales, icebergs and seabirds. Stay in a charming bed and breakfast or bring your tent. And listen – those lilting voices you hear are those of the friendly people on the Irish Loop.

Earth’s Geological Showcase

Earth’s Geological ShowcaseNewfoundland and Labrador is unique as “Earth’s Geological Showcase.” No other easily-reached place on the planet has a geological record that so fully reveals the fascinating story of our Earth – going back almost to our planet’s birth, over 4.5 billion years ago. The province’s oldest rocks, in northern Labrador, date from almost 4 billion years ago, and are amongst the very oldest discovered on Earth. The Johnson GEO Centre in St. John’s is built into the ancient rocks of Signal Hill, and will take you on an unforgettable journey back in time.
