Touring the Baccalieu Trail
Depart your hotel in St. John’s in the morning and head west on the Trans Canada Highway to Route 60 which will take you to a new world of experiences along the Baccalieu Trail; Baccalieu being an old Portuguese word for codfish.

Visit communities with unique museums, craft shops, churches, festivals and events. Hawthorne Cottage (a national Historic Site) at Brigus is the famed home of Captain Bob Bartlett, the ice pilot who guided Robert Peary on his polar expedition in 1908. Cupids offers an active archaeological dig where you can watch as they uncover the foundations of the first English colony in Canada which was founded by John Guy in 1610.

Back in Guy’s day, Conception Bay was a target for pirates like Peter Easton, who tormented the settlers. However, the settlers persevered and established thriving fishing communities like Port de Grave, Harbour Grace, and Carbonear. Easton’s old fort is now the community museum in Harbour Grace.

Later in the day visit one of the province’s earliest hydroelectric stations at Victoria, Carbonear. Built in 1904, it was the second major hydroelectric project in Newfoundland. In Heart’s Content visit the Heart’s Content Cable Station (a Provincial Historic Site) that housed the first successful trans-Atlantic telegraph cable. A craft shop is on site.
