A two hour drive from St. John’s on the Trans Canada Highway will bring you to Route 210 and an entirely different part of Newfoundland both in geography and outlook. Everything from its dialects, its traditional music and its architecture separates the Burin Peninsula from the rest of Eastern Newfoundland.
During your drive, keep an eye out for the middle ridge caribou herd and Bald Eagles or glacial erratic boulders dropped by melting glaciers 10,000 years ago. Notice the community names of Beau Bois, Frenchman’s Cove, Jean de Baie, Petite Forte, Jacques Fontaine and Bay L’Argent, to name just a few, which attest to the diverse European influences found in this area.
The architecture found in this region also reflects the prosperity and loss associated with the deep-sea fishery and includes examples of Queen-Anne style sea captains’ houses, a reflection of prosperity, topped by the Widow’s Walk, where women waited and watched, sometimes in vain, for the return of the fishing ships from the Grand Banks.

Lunch in Marystown, the largest community in the area. Nearby is Burin, on Route 221, which was once a haven for pirates and privateers. |

Southwest of Burin, on Route 220, is St. Lawrence where legend has it the first settlers were sailors who escaped the sinking of St. Humphrey Gilbert’s ship in 1583. |

Explore St. Lawrence where in 1942 two American warships ran aground and 180 sailors were rescued by the people of the town. |

Visit the Interpretation Centre in Fortune or the Fortune Head Fossil Site which has been designated a Global Stratotype. |

At Grand Bank you will find The Southern Newfoundland Seaman’s Museum which tells of the era of “wooden ships and iron men” through a large collection of models and paintings and is home to the largest mural in Atlantic Canada. |
